Rick Rocks the World began with a simple request from my friend Teresa.
Teresa isn't much of a traveler, but she loves collecting rocks. Whenever I returned from an adventure, she would ask me to bring her a rock from somewhere I'd visited.
I began collecting and documenting these little treasures for her. I often joked that she had discovered the world's least expensive souvenir!
But somewhere along the way, a thought occurred to me: If bringing home a simple stone could give someone so much joy, perhaps leaving a stone behind could do the same for someone else.
And that's how the idea of painting and hiding rocks began.
After a visit to Aix-en-Provence, France, I was inspired by the art of Paul Cézanne and the beautiful landscapes that influenced his paintings. I decided to paint my own interpretation of a Cézanne painting onto a rock.
Then, while my wife and I were hiking the Cotswold Way in England, I left that little piece of French-inspired art near Broadway, hoping someone might discover it.
As I continue gathering ordinary stones from extraordinary places for Teresa, who finds beauty, texture, and a spiritual connection in each one, I've begun leaving my own little works of art behind.
My hope is that someone finding one of these rocks will experience a moment of the same wonder and happiness that Teresa feels when she holds a stone from somewhere far away.
One friend's simple request became an adventure in sharing art, friendship, and joy across the world.
